Original, illustrated service guideOfficial sources linkedGeneral information; individual advice required

A general mandate shaped by the foreign recipient

Need a representative to handle several ongoing matters outside the UAE? List the destination institutions and acts before requesting a general document. A foreign bank, registry and court may expect different powers and formalities. UAE notarisation and authentication do not guarantee all of them will accept one mandate.

Destination country and receiving institutions

Identify the destination country, the organisations that will receive the document and the exact acts planned. Ask for their current requirements or local legal advice before signing. A bank, land registry and court may require different authority even within one country. A generic broad form can therefore be unsuitable despite a professionally presented notarial certificate.

Confirm whether the recipient expects a particular template, language, witnesses, original or registration after arrival. The legal meaning of terms such as general, special or durable can differ between countries. Do not import a foreign concept into a UAE-issued document without examining both the signing process and the intended legal operation at destination.

Fees and cost components

Professional work, authority fees and third-party charges should be identified separately in the written quote.

Understand the components of your quotation

Cross-border scope preparation

Several institutions or legal systems can require additional advice. Confirm which destination review and drafting coordination the professional engagement includes.

Notarial and authentication payments

Charges depend on document type, route and destination. Separate authority payments, translation and consular work from professional preparation.

Delivery and foreign implementation

Courier, local registration or receiving-country advice may add costs. A UAE certification fee should not be presented as the complete international implementation price.

Documents and information to prepare

The receiving authority and adviser confirm the final requirements for your matter.

  • Identity and representative information

Provide current official names and identification, residence details and the proposed agent’s contact information. Resolve differences between UAE and foreign records.

  • Task and institution list

Describe each intended act, asset or account and receiving organisation. Identify consequential decisions, money handling and matters reserved for the principal.

  • Destination requirements

Obtain official or professional guidance on format, language, witnessing, originals, authentication and local registration. Identify the particular country before arranging formalities.

  • Existing authorities and records

Supply earlier powers and relevant ownership or company evidence. Explain whether the new appointment replaces, overlaps with or supports an existing arrangement.

Ongoing tasks, consequential powers and substitutes

Prepare a task list rather than a list of every imaginable institution. Separate information requests and administration from disposals, borrowing, gifts, litigation or receipt of money. The principal should understand the decisions delegated and any retained approval role. A broad appointment should be proportionate to the actual need, particularly where several unrelated assets or institutions are involved.

Consider duration, substitutes and any ability to appoint another agent under the relevant laws. A private instruction to a trusted relative is useful context but not necessarily a legally effective limit against third parties. Coordinate formal wording with destination advice and keep the principal’s approval and reporting process clear. Avoid signing text you cannot meaningfully review.

UAE signing and the required authentication route

The appropriate UAE notarial route depends on the document and the receiving requirements. DIFC Courts publishes a notary service with virtual and in-person options and expressly leaves acceptance to the receiving authority. That is a reason to verify the intended recipient’s position, rather than assume a particular UAE certificate guarantees recognition abroad.

MoFA’s attestation service authenticates signatures and seals and has routes determined by document and issuing authority, with destination information relevant to processing. Confirm whether additional destination-country consular or local steps are needed for the actual document. Do not promise a universal chain or treat an apostille and legalisation as interchangeable without checking the applicable arrangement.

Foreign acceptance, reporting and ending authority

Keep the issued version complete and unaltered, including verification information where present. A digitally issued original and a scan of a paper copy can have different treatment. Ask the recipient how it validates the document and whether physical delivery is required. Track submission, authentication and local registration separately so completion can be evidenced.

Give the representative clear instructions and record material actions and payments. Review the appointment when its purpose changes, the principal relocates or the representative stops acting. Revocation and notification requirements may differ between the issuing and receiving systems. Obtain the relevant advice rather than assume removing a copy from your own files ends authority already relied upon abroad.

Further context for this guide

This page concerns a document issued in the UAE for overseas use. A foreign-issued document used in the UAE follows a different receiving-authority assessment. For either direction, distinguish the legal powers granted from notarisation and the later authentication of signatures or seals. None should be assumed to answer every acceptance question alone.

For the overall outbound process, use the UAE POA for overseas use guide. A single foreign land transaction may need the more focused property overseas POA review, rather than a continuing general appointment.

General power of attorney for overseas use: process and supporting evidence

The process and the record checklist are separate parts of preparation. Mark only the records you have gathered; the indicator reflects your selections and is not an assessment of legal readiness.

Your own checklist

0 of 4 listed records marked as gathered.

Selections stay on this page and are not saved or sent.

  • What to gather

Provide current official names and identification, residence details and the proposed agent’s contact information. Resolve differences between UAE and foreign records.

  • What to gather

Describe each intended act, asset or account and receiving organisation. Identify consequential decisions, money handling and matters reserved for the principal.

  • What to gather

Obtain official or professional guidance on format, language, witnessing, originals, authentication and local registration. Identify the particular country before arranging formalities.

  • What to gather

Supply earlier powers and relevant ownership or company evidence. Explain whether the new appointment replaces, overlaps with or supports an existing arrangement.

The adviser and receiving authority confirm the final requirements, validity and acceptance of the evidence.

Points to check before proceeding

Assuming a general title means all powers

The actual text and receiving law determine authority. Assess consequential tasks individually rather than rely on the document’s label.

Certifying before checking the destination

A recipient-specific format or language requirement can mean repeated work. Obtain the checklist first.

Confusing authenticity with acceptance

A recognised seal is different from legally sufficient authority for a particular transaction. Check the receiving institution’s complete requirements.

Your questions, answered

Will this work in every country?

No universal acceptance should be assumed. Country, institution, task and document requirements must be checked for the intended use.

Can I issue the document in English?

That depends on the suitable UAE notarial route and destination requirements. Confirm language and any later translation before execution.

Is notarisation the same as MoFA attestation?

They are different stages. Notarisation concerns the document’s formal issuance, while attestation authenticates relevant signatures and seals through the service.

Does a digital original count abroad?

The recipient decides its accepted format and verification process. Preserve the issued original and check whether electronic verification, a physical copy or local registration is required.

Can my representative delegate again?

That question needs deliberate scope and applicable-law review. Do not assume a general appointment allows unlimited substitutes.

How do I end overseas authority?

Obtain advice on formal revocation and notices in both relevant systems and to institutions that relied on the document. Removing your own copy is not a complete ending process.

The practical context

List each institution and its accepted tasks

Prepare a destination task list showing the recipient, proposed act and required form. Separate routine administration from consequential powers. This makes it possible to assess whether one document can serve the intended continuing role.
