Civil marriage or personal-status marriage: choosing the route
ADJD publishes a local civil marriage service with its own conditions and application channels, including information for residents and visitors. The eligibility assessment should use the actual couple's facts and the current service. Do not assume that every civil-family rule elsewhere in the UAE is identical to Abu Dhabi's local process or that a route described for one nationality applies to both applicants.
For a marriage under the personal-status framework, check the current federal law and the chosen court or authorised marriage service. UAE government guidance distinguishes this route and addresses consent, identity and other requirements. Guardian or representative issues need route-specific review. A civil marriage form should not be reused as though it satisfied another authority's religious or personal-status procedure.
Fees and cost components
Professional work, authority fees and third-party charges should be identified separately in the written quote.
Professional preparation
The scope should identify document review and administrative assistance, with advice on agreements or family-law consequences separately described.
Authority service charges
The chosen marriage authority sets its charges and service options. Confirm current amounts and eligibility rather than quoting a different route's price.
External document use
Translation, foreign record authentication, certificate attestation and travel or courier arrangements can be separate costs.
Documents and information to prepare
The receiving authority and adviser confirm the final requirements for your matter.
Current applicant identification
Prepare valid passports and any relevant UAE identity or residency records required by the selected service; explain name differences with official evidence.
Prior marital-status records
Provide divorce, death or other relevant status evidence where applicable, with complete final records rather than informal summaries.
Route-specific supporting records
Use the authority's current checklist for any medical, guardian, representative or other required evidence instead of assuming the civil and personal-status lists are identical.
Translation and destination instructions
Supply foreign authentication records, legal translations and the intended recipient's instructions if the certificate will be used abroad.
Passports, identities and prior marital-status evidence
Use current identity documents and ensure names, birth details and nationalities are consistent across the application pack. If a document uses a different transliteration or a name has changed, provide the supporting official record. The applicants should understand the declarations they are asked to make. A clean administrative file cannot replace truthfully establishing eligibility or disclosing a relevant prior marriage.
Explain previous marriages and the evidence of their end where applicable. A divorce judgment, final certificate and death record perform different functions, and the authority may require a particular form or authentication. Do not assume a foreign document is sufficient without checking the recipient's requirements. Supply complete records and raise uncertainty before paying for translations or booking a ceremony.
Consent, attendance and permitted representation
Marriage involves the applicants' consent and the authority's process, not only an agent lodging paperwork. Check which application steps can be assisted and which appearances, declarations or signatures the applicants must complete themselves. If a guardian or another representative is relevant to the selected route, confirm the accepted authority and whether additional approval is needed before arranging a POA.
Review any proposed marriage conditions or separate agreement with the appropriate adviser. Administrative coordination is not a substitute for advice on the consequences of the chosen legal regime, financial terms or later family proceedings. Tell the adviser about cross-border living arrangements and intended future use of the certificate. These facts can affect the questions to ask, even when they do not change the ceremony's immediate document list.
Marriage certificate checks and overseas use
After the authority completes the process, check the certificate's names and details and retain the complete official record. If an error appears, use the issuing authority's correction route rather than editing a copy. Keep the application references and any associated documents together. A ceremony confirmation, appointment receipt and final certificate should not be treated as interchangeable evidence.
If the certificate will be used in another country, ask that country's receiving authority about translation, authentication and recognition requirements. MoFA attestation may be part of document preparation, but it does not by itself decide every foreign legal recognition question. Plan these steps around the actual destination before assuming the marriage record is ready for a visa, family register or court application abroad.

Further context for this guide
This page explains document preparation and distinguishes marriage registration from later attestation or recognition abroad. It uses the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department's Civil Family Court and current UAE government marriage guidance as official sources. It does not promise that a particular couple qualifies, that every application can be remote or that a UAE certificate is automatically recognised in every country.
Where the selected route involves a guardian who cannot attend, review marriage guardian authorisation. For later use of the certificate in another country, check document attestation and the destination’s recognition requirements separately.

Marriage registration and document preparation: process and supporting evidence
The process and the record checklist are separate parts of preparation. Mark only the records you have gathered; the indicator reflects your selections and is not an assessment of legal readiness.

Points to check before proceeding
Applying one route's conditions to another
Abu Dhabi civil marriage and personal-status marriage should be reviewed separately against the actual authority and couple.
Ignoring prior marital-status evidence
A previous marriage's end may need specific complete records. Raise it before preparing declarations or appointments.
Assuming worldwide recognition
Check the destination's rules and required authentication. Attestation and legal recognition are not the same assessment.
Your questions, answered
Can visitors apply for civil marriage in Abu Dhabi?
ADJD publishes information and application channels for non-residents as well as residents. The actual couple must still meet the current service conditions, and appearance or document requirements should be confirmed before travel.
Are all UAE marriage procedures the same?
No. The route depends on the applicants and authority. Abu Dhabi's local civil service and the personal-status framework have distinct conditions and processes.
Can a representative sign instead of us?
Confirm the selected authority's requirements. Assistance with documents does not automatically replace the applicants' own consent, appearance or declarations.
What if one applicant was previously married?
Disclose the history and provide the required final divorce or death evidence. Check any foreign authentication and translation before assuming the document is accepted.
Will a UAE certificate be accepted abroad?
Ask the destination's competent authority. Translation and attestation can be necessary, but they do not automatically resolve every recognition, immigration or family-register requirement.
Does document preparation include a prenuptial agreement?
Only if the written scope expressly includes advice and drafting for that separate agreement. Administrative marriage preparation and advice on financial terms are distinct services.
